Oncology Nursing

Oncology nursing is a growing field of nursing that is providing a lot of employment opportunities. For those who are not familiar what oncology nursing is, here’s a short introduction to this type of nursing work.

Oncology nurses care for patients during every stage of the disease process: from prevention and detection to treatment and convalescence. They are considered experts of their field.

Duties of an Oncology Nurse:
An oncology nurse work as a caregiver, educator, nurse manager, consultant, researcher and counselor. He or she must see the care of the patient during clinical visits, hospitalization and discharge and rehabilitation.

How to become an Oncology Nurse:
Every country has a different set of requirements for oncology nurses. One may inquire at their respective health ministries or nursing associations for guidance. In the Philippines, there is PONA or Philippine Oncology Nurses Association, Inc.

However, there are certain certification programs that one must undergo to become a full pledged oncology nurse. In some countries, a master’s degree or a PhD in Nursing is required.

Employment Opportunities:
Oncology nurses can find work in hospitals and ambulatory units for acute care and care homes and rehabilitation centers for long term care.
